Is a week enough time to learn the basics of surfing?

cablecar asked the question:

I am going to hawaii for 7 days for spring break and my birthday. I plan to take surfing lessons while I am there because I really really want to learn, but my home is like 4 hours from the beach so yeah my time is pretty much limited. Is a week of learning to surf enough time to get the basics down? I know I won’t be good or anything within that time…but I want to give it a shot. (When I go off to college in august I will be closer to the coast)
thanks

Where should I vacation so that I have a couple days to learn how to surf?

Glenn asked the question:

I am a good skateboarder, wakeboarder, and snowboarder. I don’t want to surf 2-3 foot waves on a longboard. I will only have a day or two on a week vacation to learn. Do I need lessons? Do I need resurvations? am I better renting a surfboard at some random beach and going for it? Any suggestions??

Is surfing harder for girls or harder if you start later?

drever_dog asked the question:

I’m going to a camp in Costa Rica. There we will learn how to surf. what is the chance of my survival in class. We only have 3 days of surfing lessons. to what point of expertise should i be at by the end of the 3 days. for beginners: does it kill your muscles, do you need a lot of muscles, really strong?

Question for surfers. I want to learn to surf. Whats the best way to go about this?

Damien asked the question:

Ive heard getting lessons from a trainer is worth it. But I sort of know a few surfers and Im thinking would it be better to just ask them to teach me or what? And how would I go about that? Ask? Just show up on the beach? I dunno Im so inexperienced but Ive always wanted to surf ever since I was pretty young. How you everyone else learn.

Could I become a surfer?

Jules asked the question:

I’ve always wanted to surf, but I’ve never done it before. I’m 15, and I think I’m to old to start because people usually start sports in early childhood. Do people who are beginers in surfing get made fun of because they are just a beginer by the other surfers? Do you have to take surf lessons to learn how to surf or can you just grab a board and try teaching yourself?

I live in Massachusetts and have been dying to learn to surf- is it worth it?

Enemy Lasagna asked the question:

Well, recently going through chemotherapy, I’ve realized that theres things I wanna do and I can’t let em pass me by! I’m only 16, so I’ve got a lot of time to do things..but surfing is #1 on my list right now.

I snowboard in the winter, but I’m dying for a summer board sport other than skateboarding and I love the water. Theres a shop at a local beach that offers lessons..is it worth it? I’m serious about wanting to surf, and I’d like to keep at it after I learn to get better. Only problem is I don’t know any surfers around here..so it’ll get a little lonely sometimes. haha.

How should I go about learning to surf, and how hard is it?

katrinamargolis asked the question:

I’m heading out to the Outer Banks in North Carolina for two weeks on Saturday. I was wondering if anyone knew a good place to sign up for surfing lessons down there? Or maybe, if not specific to the area, if anyone could give me tips on how to go about learning how to surf? Is it very hard? Is there a big risk involving my health? I’ve heard it’s easy to break necks/bones, etc.

Is it to late for me to start surfing?

cheesestix asked the question:

One day I went to the beach and I saw surfers, and I thought that I should try surfing. Though after words i began to wonder if I am too old to start as a thirteen year old? then my other questions are: what am I supposed to wear? am i supposed to wear those surfing outfits? how much will it cost? is it outrageously expensive? and is it too hard? will it take me severe training, and multiple levels of lessons for me to learn? please help me out here, thanks a bunch :)
